Jennifer Lopez Biography

Jennifer Lopez, born in 1970, American actor, singer, and dancer, highly popular for her work in films as well as music. In 2001 she became the first woman to have the highest-grossing motion picture (The Wedding Planner) and album (J. Lo) in the United States in the same week.

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York, to parents of Puerto Rican descent. She began singing and dancing lessons at age five and set her sights on a career in show business at a young age. After high school she attended Baruch College in New York City for one semester before leaving to focus on dancing. In 1990 Lopez moved to Los Angeles, California, and landed a dancing role as one of the “Fly Girls” on the television comedy series In Living Color (1990-1994). She also spent time as a dancer for pop singer Janet Jackson.

Her first major film roles were in movies with predominantly Hispanic casts. In 1995 Lopez played the minor role of a young woman who falls in love with a Mexican immigrant in My Family (Mi Familia). In Selena (1997) she starred as Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a popular Latin singer who was murdered in 1995. Lopez’s performance earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical.

Jennifer Lopez: Singer and actor Jennifer Lopez first rose to fame with the lead role in Selena, a 1997 motion picture about the life and death of a Latina singing star. Lopez went on to forge a successful pop music career while continuing to act in movies.

Lopez, also known as J. Lo, received critical acclaim for her role as a kidnapped federal marshal in Out of Sight (1998), directed by Steven Soderbergh. She then put her acting career on hold to make her debut music album. On the 6 (1999)—the title referring to the subway train between the Bronx and Manhattan—featured Latin pop rhythms and sold well.

Lopez starred in science-fiction thriller The Cell in 2000 and in two movies in 2001: She played a wedding coordinator who falls in love in The Wedding Planner and a police officer in Angel Eyes. The following year she released her third album, This Is Me…Then, and starred in the drama Enough and the comic romance Maid in Manhattan. Lopez has her own fashion and perfume lines and directs the production company Nuyorican Films.
